NFB Contest Rules

Last update: December 4, 2023

These rules apply to all contests operated by the National Film Board of Canada (“NFB”) where you can enter or participate in a NFB-branded contest or giveaway via Facebook, Instagram, “X” (formerly Twitter), LinkedIn or NFB Newsletters, except where there are specific rules for a particular contest (a “NFB Contest”).

By entering a NFB Contest, you agree to be bound by these Contest Rules.

Details of the prize(s) available to be won, the start and end dates and/or times, and any other information relevant to entering, participating or winning will be identified on the post and/or Website, as applicable, for each NFB Contest.

Unless otherwise stated for any NFB Contest, there is a limit of one entry per person per day.

No purchase is required to enter a NFB Contest.

Unless otherwise stated, NFB Contests are open to all Canadian residents who have reached the age of majority in their province or territory of residence. If the contest is open to minors, for any contestant who has not reached the age of majority, parent or guardian consent is necessary to enter a NFB Contest. Where appropriate, the terms “contestant” and “winner” mean parent or guardian of that person.

Employees of the NFB, such employees’ immediate family (father/mother, brother/sister, son/daughter) or persons living under the same roof are not eligible to enter any NFB Contest.

To enter for a chance to win a NFB Contest, follow the instructions given on the Website post to find out how to enter and win a prize.

For contests where the winner is selected by a draw, a random draw will be made by a NFB representative from all qualifying entries made by the contest deadline. Selected contestant(s) will be contacted using the contact information provided at the time of entry (e.g. telephone number, email address, direct message (DM) via “X” (formerly Twitter) or Instagram, Facebook or LinkedIn). If a selected contestant cannot be reached or qualified using the information provided at the time of entry within three business days (or such other time as notified on the Website), incorrectly answers the mathematical skill testing question, declines the prize, or fails to return any required release form, the prize shall be forfeited and NFB has the right, at its sole discretion, to select another winner.

For giveaways or any other NFB Contest where the winner is responsible for picking up the prize, the prize must be picked up within 30 days (or such other time as notified on the Website) or it shall be forfeited and NFB has the right, at its sole discretion, to select another winner.

To be declared a winner, the selected contestant must first correctly answer a mathematical skill-testing question. Potential winners may be required to provide proof of identification. Winner(s) may also be required to sign a release declaring their eligibility as stipulated in these rules; and releasing NFB, any sponsor or prize donor and their directors, officers and employees (the “Contest Parties”) from all liability for any damage or loss arising from participation in the contest or from the awarding, acceptance or use of the prize.

Prizes shall be accepted as is and may not be exchanged or refunded for an amount of money, sold or transferred. No substitutions will be allowed. Any unused portion of a prize will be forfeited.

If the prize cannot be awarded as described in these rules, the NFB reserves the right to substitute a prize or prize component with another of comparable value, as determined in its sole discretion.

Refusal to accept the prize releases the Contest Parties from any obligation toward the winner.

If a contestant makes any false statement, (s)he will be automatically disqualified from the Contest.

Winners agree that the NFB may use their name, image and/or voice for advertising purposes related to a NFB Contest free of charge.

The Contest Parties assume no liability for any loss, damage or injury, including without limitation: (i) lost, stolen, delayed, damaged, misdirected, late, destroyed, illegible or incomplete entries; (ii) loss, theft or damage to software or computer or telephone data, including any breach of privacy; (iii) fraudulent calls; (iv) inability of any person to participate in the Contest for any reason including mistaken addresses on mail or e-mail; technical, computer or telephone malfunctions or other problems with computer on-line systems, servers, access providers, computer equipment, or software; congestion on the internet or at any website, or any combination of the foregoing; (v) damage to any person’s computer, including as a result of playing or downloading any material relating to the Contest; (vi) any delay or inability to act resulting from an event or situation beyond their control, including a strike, lockout or other labour dispute at their location or the locations of the organizations and businesses whose services are used to administer the NFB Contest; (vii) any injury, damage or loss arising from participation in the NFB contest or from the awarding, acceptance or use of any prize, or (viii) prizes that are lost, damaged or misdirected during shipping.

The NFB reserves the right to cancel or suspend the NFB Contest should a virus, bug or other cause beyond their reasonable control corrupt the security or proper administration of the NFB Contest. Any attempt to deliberately damage any website or to undermine the legitimate operation of the NFB Contest is a violation of criminal and civil laws. Should such an attempt be made, NFB reserves the right to seek remedies and damages to the fullest extent permitted by law, including criminal prosecution.

All personal information, such as name and contact information, required to enter a NFB Contest is collected by the NFB solely for the purposes of administering the NFB Contest and shall not be used for any other purpose without your express consent. By providing this information, you consent to it being used for the stated purposes. Please see NFB’s privacy policy at https://help.nfb.ca/privacy/.

NFB Contests are not sponsored, endorsed by or administered by Meta (Facebook & Instagram), “X” (formerly Twitter) or LinkedIn. By entering any NFB Contest, all contestants release all Facebook or Twitter from any liability in connection with such NFB Contest.

If the identity of a contestant is disputed, the authorized account holder of the e-mail address submitted at the time of entry will be deemed to be the contestant. The individual assigned to the e-mail address for the domain associated with the submitted e-mail address is considered the authorized account holder. A selected contestant may be required to provide proof that (s)he is the authorized account holder of the e-mail address associated with the selected entry. All entries must be submitted from a valid e-mail account that may be identified by reverse domain name search. The sole determinant of time for the purposes of receipt of a valid entry in the NFB Contest will be the Contest server.

NFB reserves the right to amend the Contest Rules or to terminate any NFB Contest at any time without any liability to any contestant.

The decisions of NFB with respect to any dispute or issue involving a NFB Contest are final and binding on all contestants.
